Finding your identity [02.27.12]

I’m sure many of you have heard about Jeremy Lin. Yes it gets annoying when all you hear are the Asians talking about them but hey, it isn’t him but God who works through him. I found this video clip the other day, and it is just a compilation of Jeremy Lin’s testimonies and I’m amazed at how he gives all the glory to God. He shows that he knows who he is in Christ and that basketball does not define him but the God that he serves makes him who he is. He plays for an audience of one, God. So everything you do, do it not for attention from the student body, etc but for an audience of one, God. So what are you? Are you a daughter of the most high King or are you a son of God? With all of your actions, what do you do it for? Do things and materials of this world define you or does your identity come from Christ? When you hand your life over to God and stop doing things for yourself and through your own power, great things will come and blessings will be poured out to you.

Proverbs 28:20

A faithful person will be richly blessed,
but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.

When God does something great in your life, do not take all the credit because it is all God’s doing. The minute you try to do it all yourself, you will fail. Jeremy Lin tried to find his way around the NBA by himself and failed. When he realized that he needed to let God take over, that is when he started becoming successful. The world will always be telling you that you must be a certain way and that isn’t want God wants for you. God wants you to be your own person, the person that he has created for you. If all you focus on is results that are going to happen because you are a Christian, then you’re going about it the wrong way. If you focus on humanly results, you will get really stressed out and you will fall because you won’t be putting yourself where God wants you to be. It isn’t what you do but what God does through you. The moment you think you can do things on your own and outsmart God, that is when pride comes in and pride leads to destruction (Proverbs 16:18-28). We need to understand first of all who we are, what our identity is in Christ, why God has created us and how we need to focus on God and not ourselves. You are a daughter/son of God and your identity is in Him, no one and nothing else. Too many people put their identity in people and things in this world but those things will perish. God will not leave you and He is forever. So your identity is not in what you do and what you have but who you are in God and how He created you. Everything will become clear when you know who you are and who you belong to.
